What you will learn

Models used: number sentences, stories, diagrams.

Before you start

Begin at zero

Line up one end of the ribbon with zero. Each space on the ruler represents 1 centimetre.

  1. Line up one end of the ribbon with zero. Each space on the ruler represents 1 centimetre.

A length is a distance, not a count of boundary marks. Starting at zero makes the far reading the length.

    012345678910111213cm
The ribbon starts at zero and ends at five.
  2. Count the spaces between marks: one, two, three, four, five.

    012345678910111213cm
Five centimetre intervals span the ribbon.
  3. The ribbon is 5 cm long. The zero mark is a starting point, not an extra centimetre.

    5 − 0 = 5 cm

    012345678910111213cm
    The ribbon measures five centimetres.
What did the picture help us see?

The ribbon is 5 cm long. The zero mark is a starting point, not an extra centimetre.

Worked example: A new example, together

A line starts at the 0 cm mark and must be 5 cm long. At which mark should its other end be?

012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
  1. Locate both endpoints and check the size of one interval.

Length is the difference between the endpoints on a measurement scale.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
  2. Locate zero at the first end.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
A line starts at the 0 cm mark and must be 5 cm long. At which mark should its other end be?

    5 cm

  3. Locate zero at the first end.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
  4. Count 5 one-centimetre intervals.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
  5. The far end is at 5 cm.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.
  6. Check the result against the question we started with.

    5 − 0 = 5 cm.

We found 5 cm. Length is the difference between the endpoints on a measurement scale.

    012345678910111213cm
The first end is aligned with zero.

Common mistakes to discuss

Check your understanding

Explain your reasoning to an adult, then try a fresh question in the interactive lesson. A result from one attempt is not proof of lasting mastery.
